  • AFETY WARNING: Replacing or Working on a DC

    • DC DOES NOT GO TO ZERO like AC (50/60 Hz). Even at low voltage (e.g., 48 V), high-current DC can kill you.
    • Always assume the circuit is LIVE until you prove otherwise.
    • De-energize the entire DC system FIRST:
      • Switch off and lock out the main DC isolator/disconnect (usually near batteries or PV array).
      • For solar PV: Isolate BOTH the PV array side AND the battery/inverter side.
      • For battery banks: Open the main battery disconnect and remove fuses if present.
    • Measure with a proper DC-rated voltage tester (CAT III/IV, 1000 V DC or higher):
      • Test between + and –
      • Test + to ground/chassis
      • Test – to ground/chassis → Voltage must read 0.0 V in ALL cases.
    • Short-circuit and ground the terminals (only if the system design allows it — common in some PV installations with grounding kits).
    • Wear proper PPE:
      • Insulated gloves (1000 V DC rated)
      • Arc-flash face shield or safety goggles
      • Flame-resistant clothing
      • Insulated tools

When is it safe to replace a DC MCB?

    ONLY when:

    • All sources of power are isolated
    • Voltage is verified as 0 V on both sides of the MCB
    • You are using a DC-rated MCB with the correct voltage/current/pole configuration (e.g., 2-pole or 4-pole for full isolation in ungrounded systems)

Common DC MCB ratings you MUST match:

Parameter Typical Values (examples) Must match exactly
    Voltage rating 250 V, 500 V, 800 V, 1000 V DC Yes
Number of poles 1P, 2P, 3P, 4P Yes (usually 2P or 4P for full break)
    Tripping curve B, C, D, Z Usually C or D for DC
Breaking capacity 6 kA, 10 kA, etc. Yes
Series arc protection Some DC MCBs have special arc chutes Critical

Never use an AC-only MCB on DC — it will explode or fail to break the arc.
